Summary

Definition: Main points of a story in a clear statement

George and lydia Hadley are parents with two children, who live in a robotic HappyLife home. The home does everything for them, but the children have grown dependent on this automatic way of life. Because of that, they have grown part from their parents and dislike them. The veldt is a simulated african grassland is one of the robotic rooms. The room only listens to the children and familiar screams often come from the room when they're inside of it.

The parents notice their children's dependency and call Mr.McClean, a psycologist to help. Mr.McClean doesn't do much, but advises against locking the room up. George does it anyways and the kids are furious. They plan a trip to Iowa to leave the house and give the children five minutes to play in the room.

The kids then call the parents into the veldt and trap them in. The parents are eaten by lions.

“That’s just it. I feel like I don’t belong here. The house is wife and mother now,
and nursemaid. Can I compete with an African veldt? Can I give a bath and scrub the
children as efficiently or quickly as the automatic scrub bath can? I cannot. And it
isn’t just me. It’s you. You’ve been awfully nervous lately.”

This quote moves the plot of the story by showing that the parents have to compete with the veldt for their childrens' attention.
