Research conducted grades k-5 shows, think alouds are critical to comprehension because it provides a clear connection between the text and the strategy. Students are able to become aware of how they are thinking, and realize how they are comprehending the text.

My experience with think alouds were good. I believe it does give readers the opportunity to become self aware of their thinking and helps them to apply reading comprehension strategies when they are reading independently. Strategies that were overused and helpful were stopping points for vizualizing, predicting & making inferences, clarity. Strategies that were probably underused is utilizing the sentence starters for correct academic language, when modeling with think alouds i used more authentic questioning to help grasp and understand the text.

By allowing the students to watch what the teacher does, as outlined by step 4 in Jeffrey Wilhelm’s instructions, teachers use think alouds to build “motivational, attention and comprehension skills.”

This chapter deals with how think alouds benefit our students and has 5 s strategies for teachers to utalize which include asking questions, makiing inferences, synthesizing, understanding author's purpose and monitoring and clarifying. I liked the different sentence stems that are provided and feel they will be very useful with my SPED Basic ELAR classes. This can also show the reader skills they are strong in and areas to focus on so comprehension is better.

Tyler Jones-

My process with Think Alouds was in constant development throughout last year. At the beginning of the year, most of the Five Essential strategies were probably underused, but as I developed, I feel certain strengths and weaknesses became clear. I likely overused “making inferences” and would too often spend time discussing what I took away from the text, not only at the advantageous “juicy parts.” Due to this, I underused “asking questions,” as I was too busy explaining my synthesis. This has given me a desire to better implement “asking questions” so I can better model and scaffold the thought processes to get to inferences, synthesis and author’s purpose.
