He wasn’t actually searching for comfort by praying, he was searching to further his knowledge about God. But, when praying felt difficult, he did end up finding comfort in talking to his father. Religion is doing certain things, or having “rules” in a sense. Faith is really believing and pursuing a relationship with God. The boy wasn’t very interested in religion, but it is obvious that he was interested in faith. They view him as some outside power that is always with them. When they find the bunker, they pray and thank him for the food. They also pray that the ones who left the food are in heaven. They help Ely, not because it would bring them comfort, but because it was the right thing to do. Because it is what God would want them to do. The boy knew this. They praise him for bringing them comfort in good times, and they blame him for their struggle. This is an incorrect image of God. The man does  yell at God at one point, but he never blames him for what is happening.
