After you read this title, I wouldn’t exactly have to be a psychic to know that you are probably reading this just to disprove all of my anti-gun control arguments. Do as you must, but it is my intent to educate you that gun laws aren’t just constitutional, but they also fail to keep anyone safe.
---------------------------------------

Primarily, gun control laws are largely ineffective because even if they did save lives, which they don’t, then they would barely save any lives. According to the CDC’s leading cause of death reports, between 1999 and 2013, Americans were 21.5 times more likely to die of heart disease and 18.7 times more likely to die of malignant tumors than they were to die at the hand of a firearm (ProCon.org). Since Americans like you and I are so unlikely to die from firearms, why enact gun control anyway? It’s a waste of time and energy.
------------------------------

Secondly, gun control does not keep us safe because guns don’t kill people. People kill people, so instead of targeting to control the guns themselves, lawmakers must focus on not letting guns fall into the wrong hands . Crazy how that works. For example, instead of restricting on certain types of guns because they are big and scary, lawmakers should focus on making background checks more thorough on catching mental illnesses people have. They should look into things people have said online and look for if the person has posted anything on social media such as suspicious posts involving weapons or manifestos (ProCon.org).
--------------------------------------

Furthermore, to prove that gun control is unconstitutional, in the Heller v. District of Columbia case of 2008, the court ruled that they could not have a complete ban of handguns under the 2nd amendment (Carter 1). Modern day lawmakers, even the president of these United States thinks that there should be a complete assault weapons ban. However, according to the Heller v. District of Columbia case, The complete ban of a type of gun, as per the 2nd amendment, is forbidden. Therefore, assault weapons bans are unconstitutional and cannot be enacted. I’m not sure why this is so hard for people to understand.
----------------------------------

On the other hand, people who advocate for gun control argue that more gun control laws are needed to protect women from abusers and stalkers because it will prevent the abusers from obtaining guns (ProCon.org). However, if gun control laws are enacted to allegedly “protect women from abusers and stalkers,” then the women who are supposedly being protected are being stripped of protection themselves, and it only creates laws that these abusers are going to ignore anyway. Ultimately, women are not being less protected from abusers if gun laws are enacted, because it makes it harder for them to get a gun so they can protect themselves against abusers and stalkers themselves.
------------------------------------

I conducted a survey, and of the 16 students surveyed, and 62.5% of them believed the lie that the leading cause of gun deaths in the U.S was homicide, whereas in reality it was actually self-defense (Alderucci 1). This is a major reason that gun control is widely supported, it is because so many people wrongly think that gun homicides are much more prominent than they really are. This is why so many gun laws are enacted, and why they do so little. Gun control laws are built on a false assumption that there are many more gun deaths in America than there really are, and therefore do not protect people from gun violence because there is so little to begin with.
-------------------------------

Finally, in an interview conducted with A college student attending the University of Connecticut, the interviewee stated, “I think there is definitely a higher homicide rate in areas with higher gun ownership” (Alderucci). His thinking greatly encaptures the thinking of many lawmakers, that being that the more guns there are, the more crime there will be. However, you may be surprised that “A study in Applied Economics Letters found that ‘assault weapons bans did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level’ and ‘states with restrictions on the carrying of concealed weapons had higher gun-related murders’” (ProCon.org). The analysis of crime statistics in high gun-control states is proof that a higher gun ownership will deter crime, contrary to popular belief.
----------------------------

Overall, the effectiveness and constitutionality of gun control laws are highly questionable because, as the evidence presented provides, they do very little to actually protect people and, as per the D.C v. Heller case in 2008, the complete ban of a certain type of gun is not constitutional. Take it as you must, however, you should really think to yourself if gun control is keeping you safe or not.

My Op-Ed

This is an op-ed that I wrote because I am extremely passionate about gun control. I think it is useless and does not keep anybody safe from gun violence, nor will it ever. One of my main arguments to support why we should actually have less gun control is mentioned in the highlighted paragraph. This is also by far my favorite part of the op-ed because it disproves a huge argument that the pro-gun control advocates usually use.
