I remember being very young and visiting the Port Arthur Public Library. There were these alphabet books that I must have been obsessed. My family moved to a different city when I was six, but I still clearly remember them. I loved the Z is for Zebra book. I loved that library. I even got to tough an alligator once during a summer reading program.

Thanks to my fourth grade boyfriend, I developed a hunger for the Goosebumps series. I read every single book that R.L. Stine wrote and would get so frustrated when I had to wait on the next book in the series to be published. I also watched all the TV movies based on the books. When I got a little older, I read my way through the Fear Street Series.

For a while, I thought I was weird because I was the only person in my immediate family who enjoyed reading. My two siblings would only read what they had to for school, and I never saw my parents with a book in their hand. I was comforted because they always bragged on my love of reading, but it still felt weird that nobody else enjoyed it as much as I did. Luckily, that feeling didn't sway me in the least and I never lost that feeling of excitement whenever I started my next book.

There wasn't a lot of branching out for me at this time since there were so many books in both series. I devoured them. My favorite time was Friday during Reading class because we did SSR for the entire period. It was heaven.

Once I hit junior high and high school, my reading was pretty much limited to whatever was required of me. I got involved in my after school activities, and I didn't make time to read unless it was homework. That being said, I found my love of classic literature. About halfway through high school, I realized I was one of few in class who seemed to really thrive when discussing books.

I got told quite often that I was pretentious in college. I couldn't help myself. If books got brought up, I would blather on and on until people got tired of listening to me. I judged peoples' apartments on the kinds of books they had on their shelves (or- gasp- if they had NO books). I always asked a guy what his favorite book was if I was interested in him. My love of reading was well known by all my friends and I adored getting recommendations from them. I get a little mopey when I realize I'll never be able to read all the books on my list.

I'd read to my students for 15 minutes everyday after lunch. We read things like "Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing" and "Hooray for Diffendoofer Day." I taught 4th Grade Writing my second year and mostly got to discuss books with my students. We would talk about books they liked and how it could relate to their writing.
