Leonara Liow made rich man country a disturbing story by telling us about how he really struggled to get to where he is and how he struggled to be able to provide for his family through the use of flashbacks. We see this when the story states, ‘so for one month he had lived with the hunger and thirst, becoming cadaverous.’  This shows that he  struggled till he was badly malnourished and I feel like personally it is really common for migrant workers to face this issues because of the high living standards in Singapore and also them having to provide for their family members back in their hometown that eventually makes them suffer in poor health conditions because of how they can’t afford here in Singapore.

Secondly, she made this story disturbing through the use of suspense by telling us about the agony he was in. We see this when the story states, ‘it cogs jammed by the spanned of an unyielding pain.’ And we can see this when it says, ‘his body hitting the ground, are the scrape and rasp of flesh against rubble.’ This story is disturbing because of how much pain the main character was in and it was honestly really sad and really uncomfortable to me to sort of witness something really painful. I feel like Leonara liow is trying to tell us that many migrant workers in Singapore actually suffer from this, dying because of unnatural causes and that we should actually know and sympathise for them.

Lastly, she also made this story disturbing through the personification of death to describe how he passed away. We see this when it says, ‘watching, expressionless,it’s breath steady on his corded neck.’ and also ‘waiting. his screams are the whispered chuckle of a rill.’ This clearly was extremely disturbing to me because of how the author really presented how his last moments was in this case, miserable.  The message of this story is perhaps tell us that this should not be the type of death that anyone deserves as he is all alone waiting for his time to come.

In conclusion, I feel like Leonara is trying to let us know that being a migrant worker here is not easy as they’re facing lots of mistreatment just because they’re not at their hometown and there are many cases here in Singapore about migrant workers getting mistreated in Singapore such as being transported back to their dorms by sitting at the back of a truck or poor living conditions and more.

This story is really disturbing because of how Liow uses flashbacks to describe how he started to think about his memories here in Singapore as his last moments before he dies.

This story is disturbing because of the amount of suffering his body went through and it is really uncomfortable for readers to witness something really painful and miserable. I feel like Liow is trying to tell us that many migrant workers in Singapore actually suffer from being treated badly and which then result to dying because of unnatural causes.

Lastly, this story disturbing through the personification of death at the end of the story to describe how he eventually passed away passed away. We see this when it says, ‘watching, expressionless,it’s breath steady on his corded neck.’ and also ‘waiting. his screams are the whispered chuckle of a rill.’ This clearly was extremely disturbing  because of how the Liow really presented how his last moments at the end of the story this case, miserable because she sort of portray it to show us what did the main character saw while waiting to die. The message of this story could perhaps tell us that this should not be the type of death that anyone deserves as he is was still alive and was just waiting for his eventual death to come.

In conclusion,I feel like Liow is trying to let us know that being a migrant worker here is not easy as you can see from the main character. It could rather be a more painful experience as while reading it, it was often being punctured by lots of pain throughout the flashbacks and the personification of death in the end.  Many of them are often mistreated as they’re not at their hometown and there are many cases here in Singapore about migrant workers that are getting  mistreated in Singapore such as being transported back to their dorms by sitting at the back of a truck which is really degrading towards them as they are being treated as things and not human beings and i feel like we often tend to forget that they are just like us too. They are born with feelings and emotions that is actually just as important as ours and we should not neglect it just because they are getting paid lesser or because they are not from here.
