I liked the quote, "Conferences are not mini-lectures but the working talk of fellow writers sharing their experience with the writing process." I have to remind myself sometimes to celebrate the work that they have done, instead of focusing on what they did not do!

The thing that hit home with me is that the conference should only focus on ONE thing. I tend to start finding things that I want them to work on and overwhelm everyone involved:)

Two things stuck with me from this chapter...the first is that a conference is a first and foremost a conversation. However, we need to be good listeners, including giving them time to think before jumping in. I always take their silence as confusion. They may just need the extra time to think about their work. The other part that hit a note with me was that sometimes during a conference we get mesmerized by what the student is writing ABOUT, and let our entire conference time be taken up talking about a cool trip, or an interesting opinion. Staying focused on a teaching point is crucial to making it a productive conference.

The one thing that I really thought about was not getting sidetracked by what the writers are writing about. When I conference with kids I always make comments about the content. I think I do this to make the kids feel like I have connected with their writing. I know that conferencing can be hard because of time. I liked the quote , "As fun and interesting as these conversations can be, they do little to help children grow as writers." I need to focus my conference time on helping them grow as writers.

Debbie- I feel the same way when I conference. I tend to want to edit instead of looking for one thing to teach. It is so hard at times to let things go, but that is why we don't edit students writing.

It's difficult to change a mindset that has been fixed for so long. It is really hard not to work as the editor. I loved the 3rd way a conference get's sidetracked (pg. 9) because that is how I have always conferenced. I plan on making a shortcut of page 17 so I remember what the purpose and focus of my conferences should be. ~ Sandie Toohey

Chapter One highlighted the components of writers workshop so nicely. On page 18 it talked about how conferring will help you revise your unit plan, and how to meet the needs for your class. Sometimes I feel so stuck to go from lesson to lesson, and it was nice to see the chart on page 19 of what to do based on the trends you notice. Megan

I like the illustration on p. 8 that shows the 3 parts of a writing conference. It was a refreshing reminder that I don't always have to come to the conference with a TP in mind. I can ask the student what he/she is doing as a writer and work from there.
