Background of Tennessee Williams

Born on March 26, 1911, in Columbus, Mississippi. Williams described his childhood in Mississippi as pleasant and happy. life changed for him when his family moved to St. Louis, Missouri. The carefree nature of his boyhood was stripped in his new urban home, and as a result Williams turned inward and started to write. In 1929, Williams enrolled at the University of Missouri to study journalism. He dropped out afterwards. After recuperating in Memphis, Williams returned to St. Louis and where he connected with several poets studying at Washington University. In 1937 returned to college, enrolling at the University of Iowa. He graduated the following year. When he was 28, Williams moved to New Orleans, where he changed his name. New Orleans, a city that would inspire much of his writing. On March 31, 1945, his play, The Glass Menagerie, opened on Broadway and two years later A Streetcar Named Desire earned Williams his first Pulitzer Prize. Many of Williams' plays have been adapted to film starring screen greats like Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor. Williams died in 1983.

Moral standards were changing in the United States. Women’s roles were also changing in this time period. Big changes in American life were on the horizon in 1959.

"I just wasn't young, not young, young. I just wasn't young anymore...." - This quote shows the theme of the problems of aging very well. Alexandra Del Lago is upset that she is no longer considered young by hollywood standards, and she just wishes she can look young again.

"Princess! Do you know something? All this conversation has been recorded on tape? "
This line is when chance reveals he has blackmailed princess and tells her his plans of using her to get to the limelight. -Jamin

"CHANCE: Are you sure
you don't want a doctor?
PRINCESS: No, for God's sake . . . no!
CHANCE: Why are you so scared of doctors? This shows that Princess may be afraid of doctors because she doesn't want them to disprove her illness.

Why do you guys think Princess and Chance Wayne care so much about what other people think?

Princess and Chance are both in the entertainment business, and so they are more inclined to care about their outward appearance. This is because their entire career is based off of peoples' opinions of them in order to obtain jobs/keep ratings up. Each character, however, is motivated in a different way. Princess has already "made it" in the entertainment business and so therefore she is focused on maintaining her image in the public's eyes. Chance, however, is still up-and-coming, so he is moreso focused on creating an image for himself rather than maintaining one per say.

Infer what will happen when Heavenly meets Princess

Ricardo: I think the Princess and Chance are growing on each other.

Chance- Chance is a pretty boy who still has yet to achieve his big break, and is willing to go to great lengths to achieve his goals. (e.g. blackmailing other characters) His personality is parallel to Princess in that they both have similar dreams and aspirations. However, since Chance hasn't been "discovered" yet, he seems to contrast with Princess in that he is more humble than her, and serves somewhat as a caretaker to her.

Princess- Princess is a Haughty, seemingly entitled girl whose name fits her perfectly. Her relationship with Chance is interesting because they both run parallel while contrasting at the same time. Princess is definitely more entitled than Chance, however, because she has already "made it."

However, we also learn of his political background and see that he is willing to damage personal relationships in order to get ahead in his political agenda.

STAGING- Everyone is to wear white in order to create a family dynamic, which is also
DRAMATIC IRONY, because it shows the family as tarnished and rebellious, but they're wearing white, which typically represents purity.

What do you guys think is the most prominent theme in this act? - Hallie

I think the most prominent theme in this Scene is that money isn't happiness. This theme is very present int this scene. Boss Finley is under the impression that money and material items are what make people truly happy, but Heavenly is not interested in his money, she just wants true love. - Andy

I think the more important theme is the theme of not being overprotective. The main conflict in this scene is a result of Boss Finley's overprotectiveness. She blames him for robbing her of her true love, while he was allowed to pursue his own love interests. - Ricardo

"Honey, you say and do things in the presence of people as if you had no regard of the
fact that people have ears to hear you and tongues to repeat what they hear. And so you become
a issue. " - This quote symbolizes the theme of looks versus reality because Boss Finley is disapproving of the way Heavenly behaves because the way it looks to others. It seems that he cares less about the reality of the situation (that Heavenly is acting out) and more about the image is puts out for the public to criticize. He wants himself and his family to have a good image on display for the public.

This state is a Protestant region and a
daughter in a convent would politically ruin me.

"Papa, there was a time when you could have saved me, by letting me marry a boy that was still young and clean, but instead you drive him away."- this quote symbolizes the theme of parents overprotecting or controlling their child's life. This lead to Heavenly's unhappiness with her father and even her life.

Still, it is not labeled who posted each quote, so I am not sure who to give credit to. Every person is supposed to post one quote and analyze it's significance.

Inside
was a little blue velvet jewel box, no not little, a big one, as big as somebody's mouth, too" "The mouth of somebody who's not a hundred miles from here." is related to the theme of love cannot be bought, as well as the theme that love doesn't always lead to happiness
"People that loved you expected just one thing of you--sweetness and honesty
and . . . "
"CHANCE: Nothing goes that quick, not even youth.
AUNT NONNIE: Yes, it does.

Consequences of your actions- Chance has to face the consequences of his "job" when it interferes with his relationship with Heavenly. Chance had to deal with Princess entering when Heavenly was nearby, and he also has to to deal with repercussions of the way he has acted up to this point.
Clinging to Youth-
Chance seemingly has clinged to his youth. This is evident in his discussion with Aunt Nonnie because we see how immature he truly is. He expresses his love for Heavenly in a childlike way, clinging to her and even producing false stories about their relationship that make him seem immature.
One person's reality might not be the true reality-
This is prevalent when Chance describes his relationship with Heavenly. He tells an entirely different story than what Aunt Nonnie described when he tells her about the play that he and Heavenly did together.

"It goes tick-tick, it's quieter than your heart-beat, but it's slow dynamite, a gradual
explosion." This quote shows how Princess and Chance feel about aging. They see it as an inevitable doom, that will eventually destroy you. - Andy

"Not long after that he drove his Alfa-Romeo or Ferrari off the Grand Corniche--
accidentally?--Broke his skull like an eggshell. I wonder what they found in it? Old, despaired of
ambitions, little treacheries, possibly even little attempts at blackmail that didn't quite come
off, and whatever traces are left of really great charm and sweetness. Chance, Franz Albertzart
is Chance Wayne. Will you please try to face it so we can go on together?
The princess is comparing Chance with Franz Albertzart in this quote. She sees him as this guy who has a crazy life and would drive off a cliff. The princess wants to spend the rest of their lives together so Chance doesn't become like Franz Albertzart. - Ricardo

"We are two monsters, but with this difference
between us. Out of the passion and torment of my existence I have created a thing that I can
unveil, a sculpture, almost heroic, that I can unveil, which is true. But you? "- Ricardo
This quote shows the theme of success and failure. The princess is saying she is being succeeding while Chance is a failure that ruins everyone he meets. At the end they both realize how time has affected them. - Ricardo

" Chance's attitude should be self-recognition
but not self-pity"
This quote shows that Chance has matured as a character. He has moved past the self-centeredness that he began the play with, and he became more self aware and rather than using self-pity to gain more attention, he seems to take a more mature stance. -Hallie

Symbolism - Towards the end of Act 3 there is a loud clock ticking. Chance says "I guess there's a clock in every room people live in." The ticking clock is meant to symbolize aging. No matter what is going on time is always going by, and everyone's internal clock shows the inevitability of aging.

Characterization - We learn that Alexandra is still clinging to her youth, and she is willing to go back to hollywood even though she knows that her success will be short lived or even non-existent, so we finally see the development that she has not given up on hollywood like she would have had you believe.

Chance- Chance becomes more self aware and matures as a character. He recognizes that you cannot gain your youth back once you have spent it, and it seems as though this message has finally 'hit' Chance. However, it seems as though he is using this as a scapegoat for his poor decisions in his life.
Princess- We see her character regress even further when we see that she has no true loyalty to Chance when she is willing to drop him so quickly for her own personal gain. She had essentially confessed her feelings for Chance moments prior to her realizing that she was still famous in Hollywood. It seems like the true reason that Princess felt for Chance was because she wished to feel wanted by him. Princess's medical condition seemed to blow away as soon as she realized she was famous again. It makes it seem as though her only issues were derived from her lack of confidence. In this scene, Princess finally reaches clarity.

Things do not always end up as you think

In this scene we find out that princess betrays Chance once she gets a small taste of fame again. This is a very climatic scene because throughout the story so far it seemed that princess clinged on to chance for the feeling of attention but then once she realizes people still want her she treats him as her bag boy and doesnt live up to her part of the deal with chance.

Nobody can escape time

This has been a theme in the whole story so far but it is also present in the beginning of act 3. Tom tells chance that" : I don't ask for your pity, but just for your
understanding--not even that--no. Just for your recognition of me in you, and the enemy, time,
in us all. " this represents the theme since chance's biggest fear is getting old same as princess.
