My Community: The Latino Community of Doral, FL

Here is a picture of a town that holds a very special place in my heart. Many people refer to Doral, Florida, as "Doralzuela" due to the large Venezuelan population residing there. That's where I grew up. There's definitely a strong Venezuelan presence, but what really makes Doral unique is its diverse melting pot of cultures. There are not only Venezuelans, but also many Cubans, Colombians, Puerto Ricans, and many more of Latin American descent. Doral has its own unique energy because of its diverse community. In everyday life, Spanish is often spoken, and you'll rarely hear people speak English to you. Cultural traditions are a part of everyday life, you see it from the food sold in bakeries ( or gas station "tienditas" as I like to call them) to the music playing in cars and restaurants, to the events that bring families together. Due to these customs, Doral feels like a small piece of Latin America in the United States. Living in Doral, also shapes how people interact with one another and cope with change as a whole.

For example, they maintain their strong cultural traditions while adapting to life in the U.S. People can stay connected to their roots while adjusting to a new setting with the help of Spanish-language media, churches, and community events.

There's a lot of trauma carried in people's families because of the political instability in their countries, and through shared experience, it brings people together and makes doral a very united front.
