The Zora Neal Hearst reading included an idea about the teacher adopting to the student, and this is something that is challenging for me, even though i only teach a class of 13 students. I have had trouble connecting with my students, even though we come from similar backgrounds. The concept from Edmonds reading tonight resonated with me. Educators should really take the time to know the space in which our student reside in. How do I make my students feel safe in a way to be opening to learning, Having a clear supportive mindset where they have a certain level of respect and understanding for one another.  I am nervous because a lot of my learners have more experiences and responsibilities that I have had in my lifetime. I am scared that I will not relate but I always try and show empathy

The idea of the brain being hijacked makes sense in retrospect when I think of some of my students that I have a hard time refocusing. It really didn't occur to me that they may not physically have the ability to refocus. I was amazed to learn about the biological basis behind some of the behaviors that our students exhibit. Educators may perceive some student behaviors as defiant; however, there are many external factors that may be at play.
