Is the ideology of Margaret Thatcher who was prime minister from 1975-90. Trainspotting is influenced by thatchersim as Renton says 'There is no such thing as society and even if there was, i most certainly had nothing to do with it'. This links to the rebel youths had during the 1990 against capitalism. Furthermore the film is set in a poor area of Scotland, in which these conditions are a result of Thatcherism.

Consumerism is an ideology that revolves around the buying and selling of services and goods. In Trainspotting, Danny Boyle makes it a clear point that consumerism is involved with every part of our lives and has become almost too much of a social norm. This is what Renton opposes in this film until the end. Danny Boyle creates the idea that unless you're part of consumerism you oppose society.

Materialistic needs mold modern "life", if you don't conform to this worm-hole of constant consumption, then you must separate from life entirely., and pursuit an existentialist movement lacking reasons , alike Renton, if you neglect consumerism, you neglect life in pursuit of meaningless death.
