The confederates surrender within 2 days<br><mark><br>March 8-9 </mark><br>A confederate ship, the CSS Virginia, sinks 2 union ships during a battle, in Pea Ridge Arkansas. The next day the CSS Virginia battles another U.S. Ship, the USS Monitor, which subsequently ends in a draw.<br><br><mark>April 5</mark><br>The union begins a siege of Yorktown Virginia led by McClellan<br><br><mark>April 6-7 </mark><br>The battle of Shiloh, Tennessee ensues claiming 23,741 lives<br><br><mark>April 16 </mark><br>Slavery ends in Washington D.C. and the C.S.A initiates its first military draft<br><mark><br>May 6 </mark><br>U.S. Congress passes the homestead act, which grants up to 160 acres to new settlers who improve their land for at least 5 years<br><br><mark>May 31 </mark><br>General Robert E. Lee takes command of the Army of Northern Virginia<br><br><mark>June 19</mark><br>Lincoln signs a law prohibiting slavery in U.S. territories<br><br><mark>July 17</mark><br>U.S. Congress passes the Second Confiscation Act, which frees slaves recaptured by the union<br><br><mark>August 29-30 </mark><br>A second battle ensues in Manassas Virginia which subsequently ends in a confederate victory<br><br><mark>September 17</mark><br>The battle of Antietam Occurs in Maryland.
