The poem is about an eight-year-old who goes to Baltimore. His heart is filled with glee; he is excited about his trip. He ran into a Baltimorean who kept looking straight at him the eight-year-old smiled but the Baltimorean smiled and called him a racial slur. This poem connects to the Harlem Renaissance because African Americans could not escape racism even in the North.

the theme of the poem is hope there is hope in Baltimore and the people would not be racist to African American people. Another theme of the story is culture and how most white people back then used to call African-Americans racial slurs as a way to put them down and not make them feel like a humans.
