Winter Break (Weekly Encounter 1)

Over break I went to Vail, Colorado and spent a week skiing with my family. While I was there I noticed that ski school costs almost $200 for one lesson. Vail is a resort, so it's more expensive than other mountains, but for someone that's just learning how to ski, $200 is a lot of money for just one lesson (and that's not including the cost of ski rentals, helmet, coat, etc) This price discourages people from learning how to ski, and reminded me of college. College is so expensive that it discourages students from continuing their education. Even if they want to continue their education, many students don't have that option. If the cost of learning is so high, people are going to be discouraged from learning.

Mental health and students (weekly encounter 2)

I was randomly shuffling all my songs the other day when 1-800 came on. I know this song came out five years ago, but it instantly took me back to a tough time in school. Junior year of high school I felt as if I was under so much pressure to do well academically, keep up in all my club activities, and be a good friend and sibling. I know we have not talked about mental health and students yet, but I can relate this to the limited sick days and covid exposures that many of my peers have brought up in other padlets. By allowing more sick days or not limiting sick days in the workforce, I think that many Americans would feel less stressed. I also wish that students had more options for mental health days in high school and college. Today, I feel as if I'm under way less pressure in college and I'm happier, but I know I would have felt way less stressed and depressed if I felt as if I had the option to take a sick day when I had a bad cold or to catch up on sleep when I was having a really tough week in high school. Hearing this song again just made me reminisce, and I wish I could go back and tell my past self not to stress out over everything and enjoy the limited time with my high school friends and teammates that I had left. In conclusion, students have been taught to prioritize their work over their well being so that when they enter the workforce, they know not to expect sick days unless they're in critical condition. And 1-800 is a bop

Teachers Pay (Weekly Encounter 3)

I was scrolling on TikTok and this video popped up on my fyp from a teacher. He goes through a busy school day, has a small break at home, then has to go work another job. I think being a teacher is already a lot of work, especially how there's work that has to get done before and after he has class with his students, and it's so upsetting that this teacher has to have another job to achieve the lifestyle he wants. One of the things I'm really passionate about is teacher's pay, and it's why I'm double majoring in secondary education and social relations + policy in hopes that I can raise teachers' pay (and help develop a better state or even nationwide curriculum, but I'll get into that more later). I'm tired of family members telling me I shouldn't become a teacher because it won't be enough to support the lifestyle I want and I won't be happy as a teacher.

Paulo Freire (Weekly Encounter 4)

What a guy. I really enjoyed reading chapter two of Pedagogy of the Oppressed, so I decided to do some more research about Freire. He was exiled from Brazil for 16 years, but continued his research in Chile, and later taught at Harvard, lived in Switzerland, then finally was allowed to return to Brazil. As mentioned in class, Freire was big on love, and a great quote from him is "I’m an intellectual who is not afraid of being loving. I love people and I love the world, and it is because I love people and I love the world that I fight so that social justice is implemented before charity." This reminds me of Bettina Love's abolitionist teaching, and the importance of teaching in a way that loves and affirms Black children. And in the spirit of Valentine's Day, he's a great example of what it looked like to live with love. I hope that I can live with as much love as he did, and my goal is to use my majors (social relations + policy and secondary education) to promote love in the classroom and when creating education policy.

Today (4/8/2022), two men who plotted to kidnap Governor Whitmer were acquitted. After reading the article I learned that there were some holes in the case, but that doesn't erase the fact that there's audio and written proof that these men wanted to kidnap the governor. It's also important to note that this group consisted of all white men. This just shows the insane amount of white privilege these men have. If these men were Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, or literally any other race, this would've been a completely different court case. This relates to white privilege and power disparities that we've talked about in TE 101 and 102.

Tuesday night (5/3) I was peacefully studying for finals when my phone started blowing up. I discovered that it was leaked that Roe v. Wade may be overturned by the Supreme Court. After being unable to focus on my studies and instead being concerned about the government regulating my body, I decided to write about this as my last weekly encounter padlet.
