Evaluating expressions that have a negative exponent is almost the same as a positive exponent. The difference is that negative exponents give you a fraction, so it would be the same answer as if were a positive, but it would be a denominator and 1 is always the numerator.

To show my understanding of negative exponents, I would explain my process on how to get the answers to expressions with negative exponents. For example, if there is 5^-2, I would use the answer I would get if the exponent is a positive, than switch it to a fraction since its a negative.

So I would tell them that in order to solve for a negative exponent you have to turn it into a fraction, and in order to do that you have to put the whole number as the denominator with the positive exponent, and the numerator will be a one.
