Sample Building Goals for the 2024-2025 School Year

Increase Student Engagement: As a school, we aim to provide a more engaging and interactive learning experience for our students by incorporating more hands-on activities, project-based learning, and collaborative work into the curriculum.

Math Problem-Solving Strategies: We will teach our students a range of problem-solving strategies, including visualization, guess-and-check, working backward, and breaking problems down into smaller parts. These tools will help students tackle complex problems more effectively and with greater confidence.

Win of the Week: Seeing My Students Take Ownership of Their Learning

This week in my second-grade classroom, I decided to have my students take more ownership of their learning by allowing them to choose their own topics for a research project. To my delight, I saw my students rise to the occasion and truly take charge of their learning.

One student chose to research the life cycle of a butterfly and created an impressive diorama to showcase her findings. Another student chose to research the history of their family and presented a beautiful family tree to the class. Even students who are typically disengaged in class were excited to dive into their research and produce something meaningful.

What made this win even sweeter was seeing the pride on each student's face when they presented their findings to the class. It was a true joy to watch my students take ownership of their learning and produce such amazing work.

Thinking Routines: Synthesizing and Organizing Ideas

Thinking routines are an excellent tool for teachers to use in their classrooms because they provide a structure for students to think deeply about content and develop critical thinking skills.

By using specific prompts and questioning techniques, these routines enable students to make connections between new ideas and their prior knowledge, analyze complex concepts, and communicate their ideas with others.

Additionally, thinking routines also help students develop metacognitive skills like self-reflection, self-awareness, and self-regulation, which are essential for lifelong learning.

Ultimately, by integrating thinking routines into their teaching practice, teachers can help their students become active learners and independent thinkers, better preparing them for success in school and beyond.
