"Well, she was less than an hour old and Tom was God knows where. I woke up out of the ether with an utterly abandoned feeling, and asked the nurse right away if it was a boy or a girl. She told me it was a girl, and so I turned my head away and wept. 'All right,' I said, 'I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool-that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.'" (Fitzgerald 16 & 17) Daisy finally realizes what marrying Tom has done to her life. On the other hand she still does not understand the value of having a baby girl. She believes that her baby will turn out like her: unhappy.

Daisy drives Gatsby car back to her home. In her anger and self pity she accidentally runs over Myrtle, Tom's mistress. "The 'death car,' as the newspapers called it, didn't stop; it came out of the gathering darkness, wavered tragically for a moment, and then disappeared around the next bend. Michaelis wasn't even sure of its color-he told the first policeman that is was light green. The other car, the one going toward New York, came to rest a hundred yards beyond, and its driver hurried back to where Myrtle Wilson, her life violently extinguished, knelt in the road and mingled her thick dark blood with dust." (Fitzgerald 137) Daisy in her recklessness and carelessness murdered Myrtle.

Following the dinner party where Gatsby and Tom confront each other it is official that Tom has won Daisy over. The way he did this was simply by saying that Gatsby did not come by his money honestly and was 'new money.' Daisy greed for power and money eventually win her over to Tom's side and because she would never want to marry someone who was 'new money' anyway.
