Connections to the Clutter Murder

When Agent Nye visits Dick's parent's house, he discovers a .12 gauge shotgun there. This is the same weapon which was used to kill the Clutter family. (Capote 171)
Floyd Wells is a prisoner who Dick confided in about the robbery and murder of the Clutter family. If Floyd did not tell the police about Dick's plan, Dick and Perry might have gotten away with the murders altogether. This connection was vital for the police in the arrest and later conviction of Dick and Perry. (Capote 159-163)
Dick and Perry still have two pairs of boots in their possession. One pair of boots has a diamond pattern sole while the other pair has a Cat's Paw design. Footprints displaying these two designs were found in the Clutter house by the police.

Richard Hickock was born on June 6, 1931 in Kansas City, Kansas. Hickock rarely goes by the name Richard and instead prefers to be called Dick. He compulsively steals and this has gotten him in trouble before and even sent him to prison. In prison, he was cellmates with both Perry Smith and Floyd Wells. He grew up in Olathe, Kansas with his family on their small farm there. He did pretty well in school and even got a few A's. He was a great athlete and made the basketball, baseball, and football teams. He aspired to go to college to play sports after high school but his family did not have the money to send him. Instead of going to college, he got a job and married his first wife. His two wives were very young, only sixteen years old, when he married them. In 1950, Dick got into a severe car accident which gave him a concussion and left his face a bit disfigured. He committed the Clutter family murders on November 14, 1959 with Perry Smith. Dick died by hanging on April 14, 1965 after being on Death Row for five years.
http://murderpedia.org/male.H/h/hickock-richard.htm

Dick was a pretty good student too and even got A's in some classes. He wanted to go to college so he could be an engineer but his family did not have enough money to send him there. He worked for a railway and then as an ambulance driver before he became a car painter and mechanic. After that he started to write bad checks and gamble. He got into a pretty bad car accident that gave him a concussion and disfigured his face a bit. He married his first wife, Carol, when she was only sixteen years old. Most of the time, they he and Carol were in debt. They had three children together before getting divorced. He then got married to his second wife, Margaret Edna. The two later divorced too.

A possible motive for committing the Clutter murders that Dick could have had is he was robbing the Clutters. This is because Floyd Wells told Dick that there was a safe in the Clutter household that had ten thousand dollars in it. This large sum of money would have surely intrigued Dick and therefore led to the murders. (Capote 161)
