Floyd Wells is a prisoner who Dick confided in about the robbery and murder of the Clutter family. If Floyd did not tell the police about Dick's plan, Dick and Perry might have gotten away with the murders altogether. Dick and Perry still have two pairs of boots in their possession. One pair of boots has a diamond pattern sole while the other pair has a Cat's Paw design. Hickock rarely goes by the name Richard and instead prefers to be called Dick. He compulsively steals and this has gotten him in trouble before and even sent him to prison. In prison, he was cellmates with both Perry Smith and Floyd Wells. He grew up in Olathe, Kansas with his family on their small farm there. He did pretty well in school and even got a few A's. He was a great athlete and made the basketball, baseball, and football teams. He aspired to go to college to play sports after high school but his family did not have the money to send him. Instead of going to college, he got a job and married his first wife. His two wives were very young, only sixteen years old, when he married them. In 1950, Dick got into a severe car accident which gave him a concussion and left his face a bit disfigured. He committed the Clutter family murders on November 14, 1959 with Perry Smith. Dick died by hanging on April 14, 1965 after being on Death Row for five years.
