http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-09-29/congo-raises-key-rate-to-7-to-curb-inflation-currency-weakness

From the article, it states how Republic of Congo raised its key interest rates from 5% to 7% which is use to combat the inflation rate in Congo. By raising the interest rate, it result the people in Congo will borrow lesser money from the bank. The increase of key interest rates is largely due to the " "tensions" in the foreign market". This resulted in a decrease in foreign- exchange holdings .

This is stated in the article which state " foreign-exchange holdings declined to $996 million, enough to cover 4.4 weeks of imports, from $1.5 billion at the end of last year."

With the decrease in foreign exchange, it resulted Congo to have a negative growth rate three times in the same year where copper dropped to 14% in the first half and cobalt production fell to 13%.

And in order to combat the inflation in Congo, BBC raise their interest , according to the article. " This will help alleviate the devaluation pressure that currently exists on Congolese franc."

http://www.africanews.com/2016/08/31/nigeria-s-officially-enters-recession-for-first-time-in-over-20-years/
Congo's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contracted by 2.06% in the second quarter. The GDP shrunk by 0.36%. This refers to a negative economic growth which also leds to a recession.
The cause of the slump is believed largely to be as a result of the slump of oil prices on the world market. That situation has been worsened by renewed insurgency in the Niger Delta region, the attacks on oil installations continue to disrupt production of oil in the region.

As stated in the article “The cause of the slump is believed largely to be as a result of the slump of oil prices on the world market.”, since the oil prices are constantly decreasing, this cause the cost of production of goods and services to decrease as well as oil are considered a major source of energy and can be used as electricity. Therefore, it decreases the cost of production of goods and services and lead to an decrease in the general prices of goods and services which would lead to a “temporary economic decline during which trade and industrial activities are reduced, generally identified by a fall in GDP in two successive quarters.” which is also know a recession.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-08-19/congo-slashes-growth-forecast-after-drop-in-copper-production
The article states that the economic growth of the country Democratic republic of Congo has experienced a "slowdown" in the first half of the year and has since lowered the estimated growth of Congo in the second half of the year. And the possible reason for the slowdown of the economic growth in Congo could be due to the decline in output of copper and cobalt by 14% and 13% respectively(decline in the number of goods produced in Congo's economy in comparison to the previous year). Gross Domestic Product is the market value of all final goods and services produced in an economy during a calendar year. And the mining, oil ,gas revenue accounts for 22% in the GDP of Congo. Since the output of copper and cobalt of Congo has decreased, which comes from the mining industry. Hence the GDP of Congo has decreased in the first half of the year. Therefore the government has decreased the estimated growth from 9% to 6.9% and then finally to 5.3%
