Begin preparing students to work with comparison and contrast by giving them sentence stems to begin.
For example:
"_____ and ____ are similar because they both ______."
"_____ and ____ are different because _____ is ____, but _____ is ____."

After students can begin expressing similarities and differences a little easier, they can start making a number of charts, online presentations, etc that can represent the comparison/contrast visually. Interactive and multimedia technology has made this easier to do.

- Graphic organizer used for comparison in which two or three circles partially overlap.
- Can be used to compare and contrast two or three different people, places, events, ideas, items, or processes.
- Where the circles overlap similarities are written, and where they don't unique traits/attributes are written.
- Technology has made these more interesting to use. A number of different things can be arranged using a Venn Diagram.

- A table is created and items to be compared are written at the top of each column.
- General characteristics are written in each row.
- Students find similarities and differences by looking at all of the information lined out on the table, organized in an easy-to-recognize way.
--These can be used to encourage collaboration between students. If used on an IWB, students can work together and discuss how it needs to be filled out.

- This is an advanced, complex task that can be cognitively difficult for students. Sentence stems is a great way to begin teaching them.
For example:
"Lungs are to mammals as gills are to _____."
"Lee Harvey Oswald is to JFK as John Wilkes Booth is to _____."

Technology enhances this by allowing group discussion when on an IWB. Students can also use tools that will allow them to do polls and input their own answers to be gone over together.

- Instead of writing out analogies, using visual aids can be helpful to make connections. With this students can identify the relationship between words used in the analogy.
- Technology can allow use of images or sounds to compare even, instead of just words.
- Responses with clickers or cellular devices to fill in the answers can also be used with technology.
