Chris McCandless did not initially want to go to college, but his parents convinced him that in order for him to be able to help people, like they believed he wanted to, he would need to attain a proper college education first (pg 114). Chris finished out college, proving his persistence, and then proceeded to ditch his plans for law school, give his savings to charity, and to skip town without leaving a trace.

Chris followed the ideology of Everett Ruess, a former explorer who disappeared without a trace for the last time in one of his explorations in the west. Ruess used surnames and minimalist approaches in order to complete his explorations without being traced by loved ones or the authorities. Chris used this approach as well, but he kept touch with those who assisted him along the way and documented his journeys with photographs and journals.

McCandless always had a stressed relationship with both his parents, who were both high-strung blue-collar individuals who wanted their children to get a good education and a good career (pg 114). Those who met McCandless on his escape from society noted the resentment he seemed to have towards his parents, especially his father, "It was pretty obvious he didn't get along with his family, but he never said much about any of them..."
Chris McCandless in short

McCandless was an adventurous soul, whose main objective was to get away from his controlling parents and use the wilderness as an escape (pg 93). Chris' thorough education provided a strong background for his two year success in the wild. The reason that Chris died however, was from his ignorance to the scarcity of the materials in the wilderness. Despite being warned countless times by people like Westerberg, Franz, and others, Chris disregarded the advice to stay towards civilization, keep as much food as possible in possession, and to keep in contact with civilians to avoid being killed (pg 202). The stubborn nature of McCandless is, unfortunately, what killed the man, and despite his beliefs, he touched the lives of many. Chris was an ignorant man, but his ignorance and stubborn nature is one of the more admirable traits about him.
