It turns out that you can tell a lot about a civilization by the toilets! And the Indus Valley had flushing toilets 2,000 years before Rome did. Perhaps the NF anchor passage could be about toilets in Mohenjo Daro (in the Indus Valley, it's one of the world's oldest cities), and the knowledge building could be about the civilization, its social stratification, etc. (Toilets and where they are found give archaeologists clues about who's who, what they ate, what was important to them, etc.)

https://www.discovermagazine.com/planet-earth/what-the-earliest-toilets-say-about-how-human-civilization-has-evolved

We could focus on how the popularity and thus their quest for purple dye for clothing led them to venture further and set up new trading sites, spreading their alphabet as they went. I think teens would find this interesting, especially if we spin the passion for purple as a popular craze that had a lasting impact. (Besides potentially linking it to the spread of the precursor to our own alphabet, people still associate purple with wealth and royalty because of the Phoenicians.)

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/history-magazine/article/purple-reign-passion-phoenician-dye-built-vast-trading-empire
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/history-magazine/article/purple-reign-passion-phoenician-dye-built-vast-trading-empire
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/history-magazine/article/purple-reign-passion-phoenician-dye-built-vast-trading-empire

Here's a quote I found on NatGeo: Though popular culture continues to depict Vikings as wearing horned helmets (they didn’t) and drinking from skulls (also a myth), their peaceful trading and cultural sharing belies the violent legend. The Vikings’ cultural power and contributions to the communities in which they settled were just as potent as their ability to sail and pillage.

What's interesting about suggestion above (about printing press) is that it may get students thinking about more recent tech innovations that have similarly changed the world. I was reading the other day that while the Internet has been almost as important about getting information to people as the printing press, AI will arguably be as revolutionary as the printing press. I think that a unit on invention and how they have changed the world will help students reflect on the inventions that are presently turning things upside down.
