An important aspect of mise-en-scéne is the dominance of the shot. Dominant refers to the aspects of the shot that immediately draw the attention of the viewer. It is the first thing the audiences eyes land on when a scene begins to play out on screen. The dominance of a scene can set the tone of the scene and influence the overall understanding of that shot.

Camera angles have a very important role in mise-en-scéne. They control where we, as the audience, looks during a scene. The use of camera angles influences how we view the scene and what we are able to take away from that particular scene.

The toad scene, a particularly symbolic scene, shows Ofelia centered in the camera, covered head-to-toe in mud and beetles after crawling into the toad's grotto. Our eyes are immediately focused on the filth and squirming bugs that have enveloped Ofelia. It makes the viewer uncomfortable and disgusted, yet we can't look away. It is the first thing noticed, therefore the dominant aspect of the shot.

During the toad scene, the camera is placed in a neutral position with both Ofelia and the toad. It appears as if we, the audience, are at the same level, crouched down in the tree grotto together, staring directly at the toad. It brings the audience closer to the scene. By neutralizing the camera angle, the audience is thrust into the scene, making us feel as if we are eye-level with the toad and experiencing the same terror and wonder as Ofelia.
