The Panama Canal was originally started by a French company. However, the company couldn't figure out a way to build it and ended construction. The United States then asked Colombia to give them the land for the canal but Colombia set the price for the land very high. Not wanting to pay this price President Roosevelt then went to Panama, funded a rebellion and sent war ships so Colombia wouldn’t get involved. Once Panama became an independent country the United States took the canal zone in order to build the canal.

The United States was neutral at the beginning of WW1 but due to multiple events the U.S. ended up joining the war. One of the main reasons is the German use of unrestricted submarine warfare. This led to the shipping of many ships such as the Lusitania and Sussex leading to hundreds of American casualties. The Zimmerman note was then intercepted by the British and revealed to the public that the Germans wanted Mexico to join the war and attack the U.S. if it joined against them. These all turned public opinion against the Germans however, the tipping point was the sinking of the US ships City of Memphis, Illinois and Vigilancia. After this President Wilson asked Congress to declare and the declaration passed in both houses sending the US into war.
