This continued a cycle of conflict because this caused the South to be infuriated because they lost a lot of enslaved people which was very costly. The South hated him, but the North praised him, deepening the division between the two sides. The only form of punishment Brown received was condemnation. As a result of this being the only form of punishment, the Southern Politicians started to claim that Lincoln supported Browns actions. This also continued the cycle of conflict as well since these allegations were going around, the hatred for Lincoln in the South grew. Sandford, ruled that people of African descent were not considered citizens and could not sue regardless of them being enslaved or free. The South saw it as a victory and that this would get ride of the abolitionists. However, the abolitionists viewed the case as a way to change the debate about slavery involving territory.
