Vaccine production is a biological process using live organisms, or their toxins. Vaccines are heat sensitive and must be stored and transported in a cold chain.

Certain vaccines also are damaged by freezing and light. Also, vaccines have a very limited shelf life (a maximum of two years in most cases) Thus, the potency of vaccines needs to be maintained at all levels and at all time to ensure administration of safe vaccination at optimum efficacy.
