At one point in the documentary “Sparkle Babies,” Lisa Ling wonders about the role child pageants play in our larger society, a society that does place an emphasis on looks, especially for females. Ling wonders if the pageants get girls ready for a culture that already does this or if the pageants give an extreme example to young girls at a very early age. Don’t worry, we will get to socialization of young boys soon. (I recognize that this is a very binary way of thinking…but socialization tends to be binary) by Ms. Flores

1.	In what other places in our culture do we see attention paid toward female looks, specifically for young girls?

2.	What are the dangers in conforming to this image?

1. I think it's also looked at in the media. Such as magazines, movies, tv shows, ect. Many magazine titles even say that when a heterosexual couple breaks up, and the female is dressing nicely, even for an even where she would need to be dressed nicely, is dressing up to impress the male that she is no longer with. So it's showing that they aren't dressing up for themselves, but for something else to impress or win something else.

2. There are some dangers with this because girls can try so hard to get to this standard and try so hard to be seen as this standard. This is a very clear cut standard that young girls will try to get too but they will go to the exteme.

1. Our culture places emphasis on the looks of women in advertisements. One place that has been called out for its emphasis on female bodies is book covers, specifically YA. A lot of book covers show just a feminine silhouette without a head. Of course faces are also considered very important in the world of feminine beauty, but a lot of emphasis is also placed on the shape and proportions of the body. Some argue that the lack of a face is dehumanizing and puts too much focus on the body.
2. The danger that lies in conforming is that girls will not grow up learning how to be themselves, they will be learning to be someone else. Playing a part depending on the situation is a very human behavior, but constant pressure to be one way and compare your rendition of an ideal to others can be damaging to self esteem and social behaviors.
