Suicide
Have students write 4 things they want to accomplish before they turn 70 years old on an index card. Have the students say what they want to do (learn a new language, go to college, have kids, become a doctor, etc.). Have each student come up and share what they want to accomplish. Place their index cards on a string across the board. After all students share and place their cards on the string, tell them about a teenage boy or girl that breaks up with their boyfriend or girlfriend. The teenager thinks the only way to cope is to kill themselves. Cut the string during this classroom discussion. Have students write their thoughts about the lesson on an index card. Play Logic's song about suicide while they are writing. Don't tell them the subject is about suicide until the very end.

Students will be divided into groups. For example, there will be 6 groups with 6 people in each group.

Each group will be given a disease to research such as the common cold, lung cancer, aids, chicken pox, etc. Students will have a graphic organizer that they will fill out as they read the article on their assigned disease. The graphic organizer will include things like; Is this communicable or non-communicable? Is this disease hereditary?

Student will then form new groups, one member from each disease.

In these new groups they will teach the rest of the group the information from their graphic organizer.
You can pull articles from mayoclinic

This could be used in a variety of different ways in Health. One of the many ways you could use it would be in teaching communication skills to students. During this activity you would provide your students with a specific scenario a given them a variety of options and ask them how they would respond. This would give the students a chance to think about the situation, process the information before giving their answer. This activity helps students focus on the importance of communication and thinking about both sides of the situation.

Resources: Different relationship scenarios that focus on communication skills.
