A camera obscura which in Latin means dark chamber is a device that led to Photography and the first photographic camera. These things were huge though so they weren't very popular and so there wasn't that many photographers.

The 1878 discovery that heat-ripening a gelatin emulsion greatly increased its sensitivity finally made so-called instant snapshot exposures practical and so with daylight and a fast plate or film, a small camera could be hand-held while taking the picture. This then allowed anyone to take photographs whenever they wanted and so the amount of photographers escalated massively.

35mm Film

Some manufacturers started to use 35mm film for taking still photos mainly because this provided much better quality photos to what you could get before, and so it quickly became popular. The first 35mm cameras available to the public were sold in the Tourist Multiple, in 1913.

Polaroid

While most conventional cameras were becoming more and more popular eventually we got to a point where the Polaroid Model 95 suddenly appeared on the market, this allowed you to a photo from negative in under a minute, this caught on massively with the general public and so subsequent models were quickly released.
