The story uses foreshadowing specifically at the end. It's almost foreshadowing that Alan would come back and end up buying the 5,000 dollar glove cleaner. The sense of fear comes from how the reader reacts , to be honest. Alan would probably have to come back for the glove cleaner to clean up his mess of giving the love potion to Diane. The glove cleaner could be a deadly potion, which is why it's called a "glove cleaner". (The name could suggest that your hands. or 'gloves' could be clean from a quick and easy murder with the potion.). If someone infers that, they could obviously be afraid of how the story would end if Alan gets the glove cleaner to clean the mess up with Diane. This can also lead to people inferring that Alan had to kill Diane due to how clingy she could of been due to the potion. It could contribute due to the possible turn of the story on how it's finished, and not left on the note it was left on.

The story uses foreshadowing and suspense to create a sense of fear because when Alan purchases the love potion he's going to regret it and eventually come back to the old man to spend five thousand. The suspense to create this sense of fear is the regret Alan will begin to feel after purchasing and using the love potion on Diane. The old man says things to foreshadow how Alan will most certainly come back to him for the "glove-cleaner" after purchasing the love potion. For example, the old man states, "Please a customer with one article, and he will come back when he needs another." meaning after purchasing the love potion, Alan will come back and purchase the "glove-cleaner" to get rid of the regret he feels.

The story creates a sense of fear by using the objects in the shop. The most crucial examples are the "glove-cleaner" which is hinted to get rid of "evidence" that the old man probably uses it to get away with his lies since the liquid in the cleaner isn't traceable. The other example is the love potion which in theory sounds great, it's under a dollar and it will make a person love you forever but not everything has a happily ever after as the old man reveals something about the potion. The old man tells Alan that his dream girl will fall in love with him but there is a twist, she will keep intruding Alan's life turning Diane into an over-bearing person which is a side effect to the potion. Now it makes sense why there is a "glove-cleaner" as the old man might have been doing the same thing to other people and they always come back. He also targets his products to young people as they are gullible and mostly worry about relationship status as it foreshadows Alan returning the potion.

The story uses symbolism with the love potion. The love potion symbolizes love life. It shows how it can have its positives and negatives with the love potion. The Old man in the passage tries showing the lesson of buying the love potion because it costs $1 but when you regret your choice of person you give it too then you have to pay $5,000 to get the life cleaner

It also shows how the love potion represents a love life, and how it could be a bad thing. The $5,000 purchase is for when you regret buying the love potion and want to make the person fall out of love with you. The old man is trying to make you regret the love potion decision so he can make more money off of the glove/life cleaner.

I believe the limited POV, allows the reader to improvise the character's way of going. The story, rather ends without much of a conclusion. I mean, I don't think it even says Alan paid the old man. But, with enough information, we can make certain conclusions from a certain character perspective. A perfect example would be why Alan was going to this store. It doesn't say it directly, but with information and quotes from the paragraphs and Alan himself, we can connect the dots. What seems to be the reason is Alan wants a girl, who probably doesn't like him, to make her fall in love with him. Not only can we get some reference of this theory by the fact that he needs a love potion, but by some key quotes Alan says.
