Ask if the deep cut is bleeding uncontrollably, does the horse seem like he's in distress and the patients details. The horse should be seen same day as people have different versions of uncontrollable bleeding. When in practice, the horse should be examined for lameness as the situation can deteriorate.

if the horse is extremely distressed and will not stop rolling / would not cooperate to move them, ask the caller if the area the horse is in is safe for them to continue (are there any immediate environmental risks that could cause any extra damage)

ask when these symptoms started, are they deteriorating?

is the horse registered with this vet? if not get details like patient history - on any meds already / any allergies / history of colic etc

The depth of the laceration (superficial or deep wound) determines the urgency

If horse is unreactive to pressure in area of wound etc, then maybe have the owner clean around the wound until it can be seen by a vet. If not safe to do so, wait for vet & they can sedate & clean the wound etc

Urgent case but not an emergency so same-day veterinary attention recommended (book an appointment - not an emergency)

How long has he been straining for? (If there is blockage bladder could rupture)

Any other symptoms alongside the straining?

When is the last time he ate and drank?

Any current health conditions or medications

Tell owner to being cat in as soon as possible

this is more concerning than in an adult, because the percentage of body fluid is higher in neonates, so any loss is more dangerous
