Breadwinner is a touching novel by Deborah Ellis, set in Kabul, Afghanistan, under the oppression of the Taliban. The protagonist of the novel is 11 year old Parwana. Due to her father's arrest by the Taliban, she had to disguise herself as a boy to support her family. Under the rule that women are not allowed to appear in public outside of male companionship, Parvana, who changed her name to Kashin, faces unprecedented challenges and dangers. She worked hard to make a living in this war-torn city, while discovering her inner strength and resilience.
