FAPE

I learned that FAPE is what protects students with disabilities and makes sure they get the education they deserve. This part of the law ensures that students are in the school they would be in if they did not have a disability. I can use this to make sure that students in my school are not being sent to a different school/building and if they are I can share this law with administrators

Accommodations

I learned that accommodations are something added to the learning experience that can help make it easier for a student. I learned many types like headphones, extra time, and larger text. I can use this knowledge as a teacher to know what accommodations to use for what students. I also can remember that what is needed for one is good for all and try and incorporate accommodations into my teaching for all students

Collaboration

I learned that the key to working in this industry especially when you have students with disabilities is collaboration. You need to be able to work with others to come up with IEPs and co teaching as well. I can make sure as a teacher that I collaborate with others well to insure the best education for my students.

Lenses

We need to put on lenses that allow us to see what the student can do and what they are good at rather than what is wrong with them. Find things they are good at and incorporate that into learning. I can use this in my teaching to just try and figure out what the kids can do and not just looking at their disability. This will not only make my job easier in the long run bc it is easier to teach them in ways they will understand and easier for the student as well,

Inclusive Teaching

I learned that we should teach and give instruction in ways that the whole class can understand and learn from. Even if it is just one kids that can not learn that way it is not fair to others. This goes for kids with and without disabilities. As a teacher I can make sure that I teach in many different ways and have things like visual aids or just giving clear simple instructions so that all kids can succeed.

Inclusive rooms

I leaned that we need to make sure that our building is accessible to all. I leaned from the stories you told that it is not okay just to make an accessible part of the building like the corner of the room or a back door. As a teacher I can use this to make sure every part of my class is accessible to everyone not just parts.

I learned about different ways to make sure we are using language to put the person first and not the disability. By doing this you are taking away the thought that the person is only their disability. I can use this information and the sheet you gave us to make sure that I am always using this language as well as kids in my class
