Rudolf Verba was one of the many Holocaust resistors in history, he helped bring out the truth of what was truly happening in the concentration camps and what the prisoners would go through. Life before persecution

Rudolf Verba was born on September 11th, 1924 in Topolcany, Czechoslovakia, and his birth name was actually Walter Rosenberg.

Persecution beginning

When Rudolf was only 15 years old, he was excused from his high school as a result of newly inputted "Anti-Jew" laws.

Military

After escaping from Auschwitz and spreading the word of what was truly happening, Rudolf had joined the revolt of the Slovakian army against the Nazis and served as a machine gunner during his service.

Decomission

After his time in the military Rudolf received The Czechoslovak medal for bravery, the Order of Slovak National Insurrection, and the Order of Meritorious fighter. Soon after he would "legalize" his name as Rudolf Verba.

Early March, 1942

In rebellion to deportation laws, Verba ripped his yellow star of David off his arm sleeve and left his home, heading for Britain. He was then intercepted by frontier guards and was sent to the Novaky transition cap.

June 30th, 1942

Later down his journey, after spending six months in Auschwitz, Verba was transferred to Birkenau on June 30th, 1942. He then had the number 44070 tattooed on his arm.

Transportation

Soon after a trusted prisoner by the SS had found out Verba was good at speaking German, he was transferred to a sorting and storing room where the belongings of the dead were gone through. Here at his new job, Verba would soon meet his "best-friend' in Alfred Wetzler, a 24 year old man who would soon come up with an escape plan for the both of them.

Escape

On April 7th, 1944, Verba and Wetzlers pllan to escape would finally commence as the two men climbed into a hollowed out whole that ran out of the concentration camp. Other prisoners had used boards and Russian Tobacco to hide the two mens escape fro the camp. At 8:33 PM, that same night, SturmbanFuhrer, the Birkenau commander, was informed that two Jews had escaped and disappeared. Verba and Wetzler were not free men once again.

The truth

Two weeks after escaping from Auschwitz, Verba and Wetzler would get interveiwed to exspose the truth about the concentration and the horror that the Nazis were truly causing to people of Jewish origins.

Spreading the truth

Soon after being interveiwed, Verba and Wetzler worked on a full 32 page report with sketches to reveal and spread the truth of the Nazis. They worked with Oscar Krasinisky and Gisela Steiner to translate their report from Slovak to German. Verba and Wetzler would then spend six weeks publishing and spreading their report around, which would soon catch the attention of the higher up war officials of the Allies.

A chance

This same report would soon be sent to John McCloy, the assistant secretary of war during World War 2. McCloy would then receive a note requesting a railroad section and the concentration camps to be bombed, McCloy would turn them down almost immediately.

Denial

John McCloy would continue to deny the constent requests to take military action aginst the concentration camps as it was a difficult mission to pull off and could possibly provoke the Germans to do more than what theyve already done.

Fight

On August 29th, 1944, the Slovak army had decided to revolt against the Nazis and soon the reasstablishment of Czechoslovakia was announced. Verba had joined the Slovak army in September, 1944 using April 7th, the dy of his escape, as his birthday.

Teenage hero

Verba passed away on March 27th, 2006 at the age of 81. Although he was gone, he will always be remembered as the teenage hero who helped save 200,000 lives and will be remembered as the first Jew to have escaped Auschwitz.
