Child Abuse is something that occurs to students on a daily basis. Child Abuse does not discriminate on age or social status. It can happen to anyone, anywhere. Many families are never aware of the abuse until many years later. The impact that this carries for the child and family can lead to many other problems. It is important for the counselor to be aware of the ethical way to deal with abuse and the aftermath of the abuse.

Being able to prepare students for post secondary plans is important and a big aspect of a high school counselors job. Counseling and providing the tools for ACT/SAT preparation and FAFSA applications are only two of the tools that counselors need to provide for their students. Displaying the correct way and leading them into the right direction for this can provide the success of students for post secondary plans.

As a future high school counselor both of these relate to my future work and will become a part of my everyday job. Confidentiality is important to remember and understand during post secondary planning and sexual abuse among high school students.

As I reviewed the ASCA website, I noticed the discussion about child abuse. The importance of reporting abuse by professionals can help stop the abuse. Many counselors are aware of the abuse and need to report it within 48 hours of the speculation.

Although child abuse and neglect can be difficult to deal with, as counselors we need to do our part and do what is best for the child. We must understand the legal aspects behind child abuse and be aware of the different types of abuse.

Sexual abuse can result within junior high and high school students. Many times we read stories about mom's boyfriend or dad's girlfriend sexually abusing the child. Another type of sexual abuse can come from dating. Counselors need to be aware of this and teach how to prevent it from occurring.

I talked to a current high school counselor at a 5A school. Her name is Courtney Wood and is the junior counselor at Plainview High School.

#1: As a high school counselor, it is important to be aware of the student's custody issues and guardianship. She does this by communicating and reviewing registration packets.

#2: David's Law has changed, therefore it is important to understand and know the change. The change of the law has changed Bullying policies in schools.

#3: Confidentiality is important as a high school counselor. Teachers need to be aware of students in order to work with them in the classroom, but not everything needs to be said. Confidentiality can make or break a counselor. This can build relationships with students and allow them to trust you as a counselor.

#4: Understanding school counselor vs outside counseling differences is a vital part for a high school counselor.

#5: Ethics training every year is a training high school counselors should attend to better understand bullying laws, revealing information, dealing with teachers and their concerns about a student and personal issues of co-workers.

(C.Wood, personal communication, June 6, 2018).

My professional perspective is to work with high school students to focus on their future after high school. Upon graduation in the Guidance and Counseling program I hope to be a high school counselor. My "why" behind working with high school students is to ensure every student is aware of the resources for post secondary education. I want to be able to assist students while in high school that will benefit their future once they leave my office.

Child Abuse/ Sexual Abuse occurs to many students in some form or fashion. I chose this topic because I wanted to be more aware of the signs that prove students are being abused. Most students who are being abused do not speak out due to being afraid or threats made to them, therefore it is important to know and look for signs.
