Student Interactives

Student Interactives levels games by grade bands and content area. It links students to other sites such as PBS kids. It's great because it puts these games in one place for you. I would recommend this resource for supplemental and early finisher purposes. I view this as a tool that students need to navigate on their own once it is introduced to them, which is a pro and con. Another con is that the games aren't specifically linked to standards. Also, there isn't a way to review data from these apps, but the games are good so it's perfect for early finishers! I would recommend this resource to other teachers because it's safe, student directed, and also accessible to students from home.

UEN Lesson Plan Library ala Meg Wongsuwan

UEN Lesson Plan Library is a collection of lesson plans that are directly related to the Utah Core Standards. They are organized by grade and/or subject.

I looked at second grade. I found great lessons related to Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. This is a PRO... I teach mainly math and writing. Math has exactly ZERO lesson plans. This is a CON for me.

I would definitely recommend this site, especially since we don't have a basal for 2nd grade science or social studies. There are some great lesson ideas in this resource!

K-2 Educator Resources - What I Think

I looked at the K-2 Educator Resources and I was surprised at how many useful links it had. It has links to Fry's sight words, recommended picture books for k-2, and even an example of a curriculum map. One thing that I would change would be to add more useable resources. It has examples and definitions of what good assessments, curriculum mapping, etc. are like, but it did not provide the actual resource. That would have been very useful. Also, I originally thought that the book recommendations were actual pdf's of the book, but they are not, bummer!

UEN Smart Tools

Once again, this is a new resource for me. At first glance it appeared that this resource would be a treasure of sources for ELA teachers (most applicable for my current situation). However, as I dove into some of the tools, I found that many were simply copies of text books that had been uploaded. I have nothing against a good text resource, however we all know that time is valuable and we don't have time to skim through text books for one or two things.

There were a few of the tools that I did find helpful though, such as the Literacy resources link. Within that section I found lesson plan templates that would help to look at both informational text and literature closer in preparation for teaching close reading strategies to our class.

I didn't look through all tabs or subjects, so I am sure there are more helpful tools. It is definitely worth exploring. It is great to see how many unknown tools are available on UEN. Thanks!

Utah Core Standards

The resource I chose for this assignment is the Utah Core Standards. This is a wonderful resource to have on hand to use for my lesson planning each week. The site lists all of the objectives and standards for each subject, based on your grade level. I would like to share my findings by listing some pros and cons that come with this site.

I noticed a few pros quite quickly when I entered this resource. The layout made it very easy to navigate through. You go straight to your grade level and then access your different subjects. You do not need to search through the entire page to figure out where to go next. I really liked how in each standard there are links for all of the subject standards. You are able to click on the link and it brings you to sites that include a variety of opportunities. Some links bring you to lesson plans or give a list of book recommendations. Other links give you a list of interactive computer games, games to create yourself, mini lessons, and much more. This is a great way to have teaching readily available.

I found some cons to this resource after exploring the links more in depth. I noted that many of the sites required you to sign up and/or purchase a plan to continue searching for just the right lesson or activity. I also observed that a lot of the lesson plans were not student word friendly. The books they request you read are way above the 3rd grade level, so I would be unable to have them work as a group and/or participate in the activities on their own. Many of the links would bring me to interesting activities, but when I would go into the activity, it was listed for a different grade level. For example, I went into literature standard 3 for 3rd grade and found a mystery cube game that sounded interesting. When I went into the game, it said this game was for 6 -12 grade. I do not understand why I am seeing 6 -12-grade games, while I am in a 3rd grade standard.

After listing a few positive and negative factors about this site, the pros and cons are about the same. I would recommend this tool to fellow teachers if they need to quickly find a standard to reference. In addition, I do not recommend this site to fellow teachers if they are in a hurry to find an appropriate lesson. When a teacher has the time to spend browsing through the lessons, looking for the right one, then this is a wonderful teaching resource.

Merissa Graves: UEN Smart Tools- Curriculum Search

The Curriculum Search, which is found under UEN Smart Tools, is a quick and easy way to find what UEN has to offer for your grade and subject. You can pull up the Core Standards, lesson plans, and educational links all together at the same time with minimal searching.

A pro is definitely how easy it is to quickly pull up resources. I saved the link to it as a shortcut to use in the future. The only con I can think of is that a Google Search on a certain topic for a certain grade might open up more resources, whereas this is only UEN.

I would definitely recommend this tool to any teacher. UEN lesson plans are usually very high quality and do a great job at teaching the core objective or standard you are working on.
