Fast food in the U.S.

Americans love fast food and for some people it has even become part of their diet, therefore it has become part of the American Culture. About 40% of all Americans eat fast food each 24 hours. For this reason it is no surprise that obesity is a problem in the U.S, though from the looks of it people are not willing to change their eating habits. There are many different fast food restaurants in the U.S. like McDonald’s, Starbucks, Taco Bell, Wendy’s and Dunkin’ Donuts. These are only a few of all the options that are available. The Netherlands does not even come close to the amount of fast food restaurants that the United States has. In fact, the amount of restaurants that serve fast food is about 152.000 in the entire United States.

Fast food is filled with fat, salt and sugar, meaning that it is high in calories. Everyone knows that fast food is unhealthy, however the U.S. also differs in portion size compared to the rest of the world. A medium sized meal in The Netherlands for instance would be about the size of a small meal in America. So the quality of the fast food is poor and the quantity is enormous.

Central Park New York (Manhattan)

Central Park is a substantial park on the Island Manhattan, in the city New York. It has been artificially laid out while some parts are still from a natural origin. There are about 42 million visitors each year and the park is seen as the green heart of Manhattan. There are many activities within the park and there are no cars or vehicles allowed, alcohol and smoking is also prohibited so it is a safe environment for children. People enjoy the park because it acts as an escape from the busy and crowded city. It lays right in the middle of Manhattan surrounded by buildings and skyscrapers.

Central Park contains different art pieces and monuments. Buildings people can visit are “The Diary”, Belvedere Castle and the Central Park Wildlife Centre. One of the art pieces in the park is a statue of Alice in Wonderland. However these attractions are mostly for children.

For a long time people thought that Central Park was a dangerous place. The reason for this was the amount of criminal activity that existed several years ago. There used to be robberies, rape, violence and even cases of murder within the Central Park. However, the city intervened and the crime rates in New York reduced so the negative perception about safety also faded away. Central Park has its own police department and also volunteers who like to help out. Nowadays the park is a safe place again even at night.

Area 51

Area 51 is located in the south of Nevada. It is a military base of the American air force. Area 51 caused many rumours and conspiracy theories. The government kept quiet for decades so no one knew what was going on at this military base.

Officially Area 51 is called “The Groom Lake Test Site”. The 51 originates from the square on the map. People living close to Area 51 also called it the “Dreamland”. During the 1950s, the United States launched reconnaissance flights to spy on Russia. However the U.S. feared that they would be spotted so in order to prevent this they had to build special spy planes. After a couple of years the U2-spyplane was built. In order to test this spy plane the U.S. needed a secret military base. This is how Area 51 was created.

Many people did not know that Area 51 even existed because the government kept this base hidden for the public. However some people knew it existed and they created conspiracy theories about alien activity at Area 51. They claimed that the government was experiencing with aliens but kept this secret.

When regular air traffic spotted an unknown object on their radar, and reported this to the air traffic controller no one knew what exactly had been spotted. Some people thought it was an UFO, this supported the alien conspiracy theories. The government said it was a natural phenomenon while they knew it was actually the spy plane being tested.

In 2013 the CIA published a document that contained a description of Area 51 and therefore proving its existence. For the first time the U.S. government admitted that Area 51 existed. They explained that they had to keep it a secret because of the strict security measures. This explained all the mysteries and theories.

“Thanksgiving Day” is an important national holiday in the United States and Canada. Thanksgiving is always on the fourth Thursday of November. Traditionally this day is celebrated so people can praise the past years harvest and other good things that happened. Thanksgiving is usually celebrated with the whole family meaning that some people have to travel great distances. Most people take a couple days off work to celebrate this day.

The food also plays a major part in Thanksgiving. The traditional Thanksgiving turkey will be served. This turkey will be stuffed. Other dishes that people like to eat during the Thanksgiving dinner are potatoes, vegetable’s, pumpkin pie and pecan pie. During Thanksgiving people watch the American football games.

The story behind Thanksgiving is about The Pilgrims, these Pilgrims were prosecuted in England because of their faith. They sailed to a new continent to prevent this. They arrived in New England and had a hard time to survive because the winters were very fierce. The Indians thought them how to survive and how to grow their own food. After the harvest they organised a feast and invited the Indians. During the feast they ate corn, beans and turkey. They thanked the Indians and God for their new life and for the fact that they were still alive. For this reason people now a days still celebrate Thanksgiving with a feast.
