2A The White Quail Symbolism Activity by

1. Example of a symbol essay question:
A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. Select a novel or play and, focusing on one symbol, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about the characters or themes of the work as a whole. Do not merely summarize the plot.

Throughout Mary's devleopmehnt as a character it is revealed her uninterest in having sexual relations with her husband as her focus is solely based upon her garden. By Steinbecks choice in the name Mary, it serves as not only an allusion toward Virgin Mary within the Bible, but also represents Marys charcter as a whole as she remains pure by not having sexual interactions with her husband.

One example of a symbol portrayed by the White Quail was the symbol of the white quail, which symbolized Mary as well as purity and idealism. This white quail symbolized this because, in the White Quail, Mary showcases physical purity and innocence, and the white quail represents this because white is seen as a very pure color and portrays Mary' pure persona.

One of the symbols in the white quail is the dog that Harry would like to have, but he is unable to because of Mary's garden. The function of the dog symbolism is to represent the different values and interests that people can have in a relationship. This dog illustrates how these differing values can cause problems because Harry would like to adopt a dog, but Marry refuses this, which leads to her becoming upset. This dog helps to represent one of the many problems in their relationship that result from people who are not compatible with each other.

The Cat symbolizes reality, as it seeks to kill and eat the white/pure quail inside of the garden. Harry kills the quail and lies, saying he scared away the cat; he then states to himself that he is lonely. It's as though he is sacrificing himself for his wife/the garden. The cat is reminiscent of Harry, and the reality of their relationship. Harry states that he is hungry in relation to Mary, just as the Cat is hungry for the Quail. - Vincenza Valdepenas

The dog symbolizes the power that Harry wishes he had in his relationship with Mary, that she will not allow him to have, because the dog would "[dig] holes and ruin plants" in her garden. The dog is also a symbol of carelessness that Harry will never be allowed to have due to Mary's protection over her perfect garden. Mary's overarching protection over the said garden makes an unequal relationship where Harry is seen as a submissive partner, rather than an equal.

This meaning is exposed the most towards the end of the passage, when the cat attacks the White Quail that visits Mary's little garden. After the cat attacks, Mary says that the cat was "after her" or after the "secret me", which shows the cat trying to get into that secret part of her. The cat wants to get in! The world wants to get in. They both want to understand and know how to change her, just like how Harry has been trying to get closer to her.
