This treatment includes a structured regimen of HIV medications to extend the quality of life and prognosis for patients with HIV. These medications prevent the virus from replicating itself, which greatly reduces the viral load of HIV in the body. The goal of ART is to reduce the viral load of HIV to an undetectable level within the patient. This almost completely eliminates the likelihood of the patient transmitting the disease to a sexual partner.

These medications are classed into seven groups based on how they fight the HIV virus.

The continuous development of new and improved HIV medications has greatly reduced the risk of severe side effects and drug interactions; however, these risks still exist. Side effects can range from dizziness and headaches to swelling of the tongue, throat, or liver which can be fatal. Drug interactions can occur between other HIV medications as well as with other medicines, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products. This makes it very crucial to research these potential effects before starting any type of medication or supplement.
