He was a friend of Derice Bannock's father and tried to recruit sprinters for a bobsled team many years ago. He was an American gold medalist bobsledder many years ago at the Winter Olympic but later disqualified due to him cheating in one of the races. Derice and Sanka manage to convince him to coach the bobsledding team.

But Coach Irving is stubborn in his answer and refuses to accept their offer. He constantly tells them to stop pestering him over and over with the same words. This shows commanding because he commands them over and over to stay away from him  and to give up the bobsled team idea. This is shown as a pacesetting leadership style because Pacesetting means to set high standards for one's performance, usually a negative style.
