"Old Reliables"
Given to them by Major General Clarence Huebner, Commander of V Corps in a letter of commendation for completing a task smoothly and efficiently he assigned that other divisions were unable to complete.
"Notorious Ninth/Niners"
This was based on the divisions code name, "Notorious", it pretty much just stuck since they would use Notorious as their call signs.

"Go Devils"
When the division was reactivated prior to WWII one of the units assigned to it was the 60th Infantry Regiment, this nickname is specifically for them. In a mock battle against the 44th Infantry Regiment, someone shouted, "Way to go, you devils!" So many men shared the story that it became their nickname, even painting GO and a devils head on their helmets. It turns out that a Go Devil is a ramrod used to clear oil pipelines, this is pretty much what the regiment did, they pushed through to clear the way.

<del>"AAA</del>O" Slogan
Anything, Anytime, Anywhere, Bar Nothing. Another unit that was assigned to the 9th Infantry Division was the 39th Infantry Regiment. Colonel Harry "Paddy" Flint named them this because, this was his new motto. To work together as a gang and help eachother. Battalion commanders said either everyone has the slogan or no one has the slogan, it became uniform.

The main insignia of the 9th Infantry Division is the Octofoil also called the Psychedelic Cookie. The red stands for the Artillery and the blue stands for the Infantry. White is the color of the numbers on the division's flags, then finally the olive drab rim symbolizing the US Army. It also represents the ninth son of a family, him in the center and his eight brothers around him.

4 Medals of Honor
- the most significant, to me, of these individuals was Lt. Col./Cpt. Matt Urban. He led the 60th Infantry Regiment at its forefront, he alone saved his regiment from destruction by exposing himself even destroying the tanks that were troubling them, he was wounded twice that day and sent to England. When he got word his unit was suffering terrible losses he hitchhiked his way to his unit. He once again was up against heavy fire he ran through and mounted a tank exposing himself again but destroying the enemy. Every time he was wounded he refused to be evacuated until the mission was complete.
86 Distinguished Service Crosses
6 Legions of Merit
1,789 Silver Stars
55 Soldier's Medal
5,518 Bronze Stars
1 Distinguished Flying Cross
124 Air Medals

They participated in 8 campaigns. First they started out in Operation Torch in North Africa going from French Morocco all the way to Tunisia. Then they were tasked with invading Sicily. After that joined those at Normandy 4 days after D-Day. Their next conquest was to liberate Northern France and Belgium, then into the Rhineland and pushing to Ardennes and winning the Battle of the Bulge. Then pushing all the way to Germany. They were extremely successful because they did not fail in completing any of their missions.

The 9th Infantry Division also participated in Vietnam with the Brown Water Navy particularly in the Mekong Delta. They even found the way to combat guerilla warfare that still influences tacticians today. Then in the 1980s they became a test group for new military technology like the Humvee. It was eventually inactivated at the end of the Cold War. Some say that if the Army were to activate more divisions the 9th Infantry would be the first.

The first Commander General of the 9th for WWII was Manton S. Eddy, he led the division through Operations Torch, Husky, and Overlord. The second commander was Louis A. Craig who led them for 304 days right after Eddy had liberated France. These 2 were both very successful because they had the guts and the skills needed to spearhead through Europe.
