Community Created Connection by Aris Winger

What relevant norms do we set?
What are best practices that we use to create community?
How do we create community in a class with 35 students that meets for 45 minutes?
How do we get students to take some responsibility for creating this connection also?

One 2nd grade teacher I know has a position in her class called the participation police. The students take turns being the police and their job is to make a checkmark next to each student's name when they participate. They get to weear a badge on their day as the participation police. At the beginning of the year, the kids were pretty quite. Now, they all love to share. The teacher checks the list periodically and follows up on students that aren't participating - in a super inviting way. Maybe more important, she is super interested in what students have to say and that has also spread to the way the students interact with each other.
