He said when he looked into the mirror he saw a corpse standing looking back at him. This is showing how he is not the same person as he was before he went into the concentration camps. He don't recognize himself. To him Elie Wiesel, the 15 year old boy died when he entered the first concentration camp. He will never be the same since. He was no longer a normal person.
