When I was in grad school I first learned two routes: one connecting my apartment to the math building and the other connecting my apartment to the rec center. One day I had to go from the math building to the rec center. I did not know how to go directly and this was a problem. Like any mathematician I attacked the problem by reducing it to one I solved before.; that is, I walked home first. In actuality I didn't have to walk all the way home; at some point I saw the path from home to the rec center. I improved the solution. Slowly
