As Jonas was playing catch he kept looking from the apple to the tunic he was wearing. the apple kept changing color for an instant when he was throwing it. Then, the Giver places his hands on his (Jonas') back. Finally, the Giver has to pull the memory from his mind as transmit it into the Receiver. His perfect community. The only way Jonas knows how to live is in his perfect community were everyone is the same. It shows what the community doesn't get to see. It's like a sneak peek into what you will read about. And it gives the reader something to be hooked by, like the intro to an essay it gets the reader to continue to read what they started to read.
