In chapter 6 of "Every Song Ever", Ratliff talks about and evaluates the concept of 'the single note' within music. He gives us many examples to explain what 'the single note' is and how to evaluate its presence within the everyday music that we listen to in our lives. With these examples, we ask how important this concept is and how it affects the way we listen to the music that we love. Does it change our perspective? Does it make it better or worse? Also, how can we critique our everyday music in context to this idea? Ratliff makes many arguments of his own that help us to answer these questions as well as force us to find more of our own examples of this. As we try and relate 'the single note' to our own music, we gain a better understanding of the concept as well as a better understanding of Ratliff's argument.

Defining 'The Single Note' in Music

In his chapter, Ratliff defines 'the single note' as a way for a musician or artist to add a sense of realness to their music. He says that "with a single note you have authenticity" (Ratliff, Every Song Ever, pg. 72). Ratliff also argues that the concept is able to achieve this is music because artists are able to make one single note their own. "...because nobody else has played the single note exactly the same way" (Ratliff, Every Song Ever, pg. 72). I agree that this concept really allows for the conveying of realness within a song, as the artist/musician is able to make it whatever they want it to be.

An example that Ratliff uses is the song "Furthest Thing" by Drake. Ratliff talks about a specific line in the song that Drake raps "In one breath, all around B" (Ratliff, Every Song Ever pg. 73). Ratliff argues that this example, along with many others, use the single note concept and make their song sound like an event as they lean on one single note in the song. This is a great example in that you can hear how Drake stays on one note for most of the song but gives it his own twist in many ways to emphasize his meaning in the song.

The song "Ignition (Remix)" by R. Kelly is one that I think really shows the concept of 'the single note" in music. In the chorus of the song, R. Kelly seems to stay on the same note for most of it, often adding in others, all while keeping it his own style. He is able to change things up in a way that are still able to keep things simple enough to add just enough character to the song.

Ratliff's argument about 'the single note' gave us many different ideas to always think about as we listen to or play music in our everyday lives. This concept serves as a very interesting part of music because I think that keeping it simple is always successful and being able to do this while adding your own twist in music is even better!
