- system ONLY ensures equal access of opportunities, but they don't guarantee the extent to which these resources are received. (Maybe a need for more well-rounded system that covers more aspects, since these aspects are relative. go down to the RC level)

- Merit = things that can be measured using a yardstick

- Equity VS equality. Equity first? Equity needs to start at the bottom level. That's where the foundation lessons (LSM LSP) come in 

- Government needs to go down to the grassroots level and develop policies that are more specific, to ensure the people who need it are really getting help 

- Students are left alone after school and during weekends

- Better linkages between teachers and family centres. 

- The multiplier effect influenced the individual's choice. 

- Rich ricky had more access to social capital, which schools don't provide (social capital & economic capital) 

- Some CCAs in school are unequal because they get to go overseas, e.g. fencing, band, archery

Challenging because time is a constraint 

Relatively good representation because they don’t know how many hours they need for that goal 

Quite common that these people (Mikeys) are more active, not surprising 

More wealth = better access, less effort needed, Ricky cashed in on the advantage, not his fault, it’s his parents who do it 
Okay to have the view that you want to support your child as best as you can but it’s still unfair 

Starting point not the same but can’t make it the same 

Factors: Government’s help is finance but parent’s expectations and how they bring up the child also matters 

But providing too much assistance undermines meritocracy 

Limitations of meritocracy- have to implement across the board, cannot really be applied in only area but not the others

Equality and fairness cannot exist simultaneously

Too much assistance --> won’t understand the value of working hard to break out of the cycle of poverty, resilience needs to be polished 

People who always receive recognition: it’s not that the lower SES do not have as good character or morals, they’re not recognised because they don’t have as many opportunities

- Quality matters- private tuition has a larger multiplier
- low SES students has smaller multiplier so they are at a disadvantaged
-  Effort does not equate to success as Poor Sally dedicated a lot of hours to CCA but only received Commendable
- Poor Patsy does not have enough time to study if not she would be able to obtain a scholarship
- Meritocracy is only about grades but not other circumstances such as hobby, sleep
- it is impossible to excel in everything #moneymakestheworldgoround
- Students have opp to join extracurricular activities that may not be accessible beyond the school environment such as disadvantaged students
- Students who like arts don't have enough funds especially those of lower SES
