While working through this class and choosing suicide as my topic, I found that I have a legal obligation to report suspected self-harm cases. Before this class I had no clue that as a mandatory reporter, I was responsible for reporting self-harm. As a teacher we have been taught to report abuse and neglect, never really given a definition of what abuse and neglect might be.

Although I personally have not had any issues with attempted suicide or suicidal ideations, I have had several friends and family members who have attempted and completed the act. In knowing my legal and ethical obligation as a future counselor I know that I would not want any family to go through what I have been through. If I can help prevent someone from harming themselves than I am more than happy to do so, not just because I am legally and ethically obligated to. This class has been a real eye opener for me.

As high school counselors it is important to have a comprehensive guidance program in place that provides guidance in the prevention, intervention and postvention relating to student health and mental well-being. To do so counselors should be up to date on the signs and methods of preventing students from going down the road of no return.

Some of the most important practices that need to be in place when working with suicidal students is having a team together that has created procedures that need to be in place when a crisis happens.

Have a program in place to that promotes the prevention, intervention and postvention of suicide.

Provide staff and students with resources need to identify possible warning signs.

Knowing that reports about must be made within 48 hours of suspecting abuse or neglect.

Being open and honest with student about confidentiality.

This interview was conducted with Mr. Warren Kostencki, 11th grade counselor at Killeen Early College High School in Killeen, TX.

One of the major issues that school’s face regarding suicide is the unknown impact that COVID-19 and being isolated from their peers over the past 16 months has had on their mental well-being. We have had to send police out to several students homes out of fear that they may harm themselves.
