THE ARCHITECT OF THE CLERICS - NICOLAU NASONI

Nicolau Nasoni was born in San Giovanni Valdarno on June 2, 1691. He spent his adolescence in his hometown, where his friend and master, Vincenzo Ferrati, discovered his great potential as a designer. He decided to take Nasoni to Siena and offered him the opportunity to work as an apprentice, which allowed him to evolve at an artistic and social level.
Nasoni arrived in Portugal in September 1725 as responsible for the aesthetic renovation of the sacristy and the main chapel of the Cathedral of Porto. In this work, the painter who brought to Portugal the novelty of the quadrature, demonstrates with mastery the technique of painting in an illusionist perspective.

From 1731, with the design for the church and tower of the Clerics, the figure of the painter Nasoni definitely gives place to the figure of the architect and designer Nasoni.

Nicolau Nasoni excelled in two great arts: architectural and pictorial. In the north of Portugal, and especially in Porto, he designed numerous religious and civil buildings, which still mark the architectural panorama of the city.

He died on August 30th, 1773 and was buried at the Church of the Clerics.

The Dom Luís I Bridge or Luís I Bridge, is a double-deck metal arch bridge that spans the River Douro between the cities of OPorto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. At its construction, its 172 metres (564 ft) span was the longest of its type in the world.

Romantic Museum

The Romantic Museum of Quinta da Macieirinha in Porto is housed in a striking mansion, where Charles Albert of Sardinia found refuge after abdicating when he was defeated by the Imperial Austrian army. He spent the last year of his life here until he died in 1849 of tuberculosis. The rooms that visitors explore during a visit of the Romantic Museum have been redecorated in his memory.

The Romantic Museum recreates a nineteenth-century aristocratic house. Its interior has a special charm with its rooms beautifully decorated with painting and antiques. Most of the mansion is open to the public, including the most impressive rooms: the great drawing room, a small chapel and the chamber where the King died.

São Bento station

Porto Railway Station - São Bento, also called São Bento Station, and originally as Porto Central Station, is an interface of the Minho Line, which serves the city of Porto, in Portugal. Located at Praça de Almeida Garrett, in the Historic Center of Porto, the station has established itself as one of the main monuments in the city, being especially famous for its tile panels. The building, of French influence, is the work of the Portuguese architect José Marques da Silva. The station entered service, on a provisional basis, on 8 November 1896, having only been officially opened on 5 October 1916.

Ancient and beautiful, with a girlish profile, this beautiful and immense bridge is, in itself, in addition to an impressive work of "ingenuity and art", as Camões would say in his Lusíadas, it is a very important tourist spot in the city.

Monastery of Serra do Pilar. The Serra do Pilar Monastery, ex-libris of the city of Gaia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. It preserves an interesting church and cloister with a circular plan, a unique example in Portugal. It was built in 1538 and took 72 years to complete. In 1932, during the siege of Porto, it was transformed into an improvised Fortaleza. At the beginning of the 20th century, it became a barracks for the troops. In front of the Church, there is a magnificent viewpoint, from where you can see the city of Porto and the Douro River.

Dragon´s Stadium is a football stadium, located in the parish of Campanhã, in the city of Porto, owned by FC Porto, where the football team plays its matches at home.
The stadium was inaugurated on November 16, 2003, and has a capacity for 50 033 spectators.
The venue has also been the scene of numerous events, such as its use for Euro 2004, the 2018/19 UEFA League of Nations, the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League and the many musical concerts already held.

The building was built in the mid-19th century in a neoclassical style and is situated in the city centre, next to St. Francis Church. This historic building was indeed established in the ruins of the Convent of San Francisco after it was burned down during the Liberal Wars. The Stock Exchange Palace was built in 1842, but was only inaugurated in 1891.

Inside this neoclassical National Monument, you will visit the large central courtyard called the Courtyard of nations, closed by a structure glass that allows a beautiful natural light throughout the Palace.

Afterwards, you will be taken to an impressive marble and granite staircase and explore the Golden Room, which is covered with gold leaf, the General Assembly Room, completely decorated in wood and other splendid rooms until you reach the highlight of the Palace, the Arab Room. This 300-metre room is decorated in moor's style, inspired by the Alhambra

The Crystal Palace, inspired by the Crystal Palace in London was opened officially to host the 1865 International Exhibition. After nearly ninety years of standing strong it was demolished to make space for the Rosa Mota pavilion (named after Portuguese marathon runner)

The Celerigos Tower

The Clerigos Tower is one of the paradigmatic architectural landmarks of Porto. The structure is, in fact, part of the Clerigos Church, representing its bell tower. The church proper was built between 1732 and 1750.
The entire façade of the temple shows a very interesting Baroque decoration.
The top is accessed via a spiral staircase with 240 steps and is 75 meters.
In addition to the stupendous view, you can visit the Museum of the Irmandade dos Clérigos which includes pieces from the church's legacy and includes paintings, sculptures, antique furniture and tapestries.
The Clérigos Tower, in Porto, received 665,785 visitors in 2017.
