When Carli was around eleven years old, the first team she played on was Delran Dynamite. During one of the games they fell behind in the first half of the game. Their coach, Mrs. Thornton, tells the team that they needed to score a goal before the game ended. Carli came back to the defensive third of the field and got the ball, dribbled up the field and beat multiple defenders, and shot it. "On the sideline, Mrs. Thornton throws up her arms and shouts her delight. I am eleven years old at the time, and beyond ecstatic, not merely because I've scored a goal but because all the time and effort I've put into practice has paid off..." (15) All of the drills she has done, and all of the practices she has worked hard on had finally paid off with a game-tying goal.
1st experience

Carli's cousin, Jaime, who is a multisport, student athlete is one of Carli's inspirations. Carli doesn't have a big sister to look up to, but her cousin acts as her older sister and is a great role model for her. Jamie is a great example of how you should be not only a good athlete, but a good person as well. She teaches her many lessons that still stick with her. Unfortunately, Jamie had an injury that left her out of playing sports for 9 months. As soon as she can play again, she gets right to it, "I am in awe of Jamie's will and drive. It teaches me a wonderful lesson: there is no substitute for hard work." (17) Although Jamie was out for such a long time, the work that she put in, had her still be the great player that she is, even after she got hurt. This is something that drives Carli to keep going with soccer, and to work hard.
2nd experience

At twelve years old, Carli realizes that she needs more of a competition to play against better players, on a better team. So she goes to a Select tryout. Anytime she has a good play, her head goes up to see if any coach saw her. When she would mess up, her head would go up, and she would hope no one had seen it. The list was posted, "The evaluators have had a good look at everyone and have decided you are not Select quality." (24) Carli did not make the team, but she uses it as a reason to keep driving. Although she did not make the Select team she tried out for, there was a coach in a nearby town that had seen her tryout. She joins the team, the Medford Strikers, and plays as one of their core players. Her will to still play, after she had not made the team kept on driving her to play the best she could, to prove the coaches at the Select team wrong, and that she should have been chosen.
3rd experience

Carli goes to a U-21 camp, where the coach Chris Petrucelli has to choose players to take to Brazil, for the Nordic Cup. After the camp, each player gets an evaluation, and then the list gets posted for the 18 players that get to go. Carli, is not one of those 18. Her coach tells her, "'...the truth is that you are not performing to the level of a national team player'" (35) After this, it really discourages Carli, and she calls her parents and she decides to fly back home to New Jersey. She later decides that she will play her senior year at Rutgers, get a degree, then start to look for a job.
4th experience

Not too long after she was cut from the U-21 Women's National Team, Carli meets James Galanis, who is a great coach and trainer, and wants to help her in her development to be a great soccer player. She trains with him for a while, then one time, he asks her what she wants to do with her soccer career, and she wanted to play for the U.S. Women's National Team. James says, "'Mentally, you are weak. You don't push yourself hard and you are lazy, and you aren't the sort of player who is going to thrive under pressure. And your character? That is poor.'" (44) James kept on going on about, how Carli had to put soccer over everything else. She had to work to get to the spot where she wanted to be, and that she has to take some sacrifices to make it there. Even if that means leaving a party, or missing something to train. Carli wasn't bothered by it, and she started to work and train more, and more with James.
5th experience

Carli went to a camp in Portland, Oregon. The U.S. National Women's Team is setting the roster for the Ukraine match at Merlo field. She wanted to be on the team, so, so badly. She knew that she might not. She was used to it after all. The many times she has failed to make a team. In the circle, while Greg was reading the names, she was on the outskirts. She did not play bad at the camp, but maybe not her best. He read the names, "'Fotopoulos...Markgraf...Milbrett...O'Reilly…' Somewhere in the middle he says: 'Lloyd.'" (60) She made the team. Six days before her twenty-third birthday. Her lifelong dream, finally come true. After all of the hours and hours training. After the failure, and little hope left at times. She had finally done it.
6th experience

They are up 4-0, then Tiffney scores her 100th goal. Last year she had quit, but once there was a new coach, Greg, he brought her back. Not long after Tiffney's goal, Carli gets called to warm up. In the sixty-fourth minute, she goes in for Aly. She makes some good plays, especially one to Heather O'Reilly, "As time winds down I beat a defender and make a quick run up the middle and thread the ball to Heather O'Reilly..." They were told that they were one of the best U-21 teams there is (she is overage for the team, but the rules do allow a couple over-age players). They rolled straight through, winning every game. They won the Nordic Cup, and not long after, Carli was payed. As she says, "...I get my first payday as a soccer player-a $5,000 Athlete Support Grant from the U.S. Olympic Committee." (64) The money that she got paid wasn't a life changing payday, but it was still a big deal to her, because it shows that she is going in a good direction for her future career in soccer.
8th experience

Carli is under a contract with U.S. Soccer, and she has endorsements from Nike, Adidas, and Puma. Her family wanted her to accept Rich's offer to be her agent, "'It's great that we can keep this in family and have someone representing you who we can completely trust,' my father tells me." (68) However, after some thought, Carli decided to not take Rich's offer. She did not want to put her mom's job in danger, because she worked for Rich, and her family was mad at her for making one of her first independent decisions, and they think that she really messed it up.
9th experience

After a scrimmage against San Jose, California, her coach, Greg, was not happy, and he wanted to make sure that they knew that. He called all of the players that were part of the 2004 Olympic team, and split them off into different groups. There were three groups, Greg said to two of the groups that Carli was not in, that they would fight for each other, and that they would do whatever it takes to win. However, to the group that Carli was in, he said, "'You are the people who don't have heart and don't work hard and don't care about the team.'" (85) What he had just said had really unmotivated Carli, and although Greg is the coach, and Carli is a player, saying that they have no heart. Criticism is good, but saying something like that is way too far over the line.
10th experience

Blood starts to gush, but Carli didn't even realize that she had hurt her nose, until the trainer and doctor come onto the field telling her that she had broken her nose. She is then subbed out and they take her to the locker room, and with no warning whatsoever, the doctor snaps her nose back into place. In the sixth minute of overtime, Carli scored a goal, but it is not over yet. There was still twenty four minutes left in overtime, which gives Brazil some time to score. Carli has another opportunity to score, and shoots a left-footer to the goal at the far post, but it hits off of it. One last play until the game is over. One of the forwards curve the ball to a player in the box, and gets a head onto it. A low header, but Hope saves it. The whistle is blown. They had won the Olympics.

When her parents come over, she gives them a tour of the house, and they start to compliment her on how nice it is, and they are proud of her for doing so much to get a beautiful home like she has. Then they started to resolve things and she learned that her dad had to have heart surgery, and that he was rushed to the hospital. Carli owned up to everything that she did, and they were all good like a family again.
18th experiment

When Jill becomes the coach of the team, she loves the way that Carli plays. She is also not as mean in her criticism as the old coach, Greg, was. During the World Cup with Jill, she shows Carli some of the various fouls that Carli has gotten, and Jill tells her, "'We just need you to be careful,'" (187). She also tells her that she doesn't need to change her game, but they wanted her to make good tackles, and win the ball, but not with too much aggression that gives up the ball for a foul.
19th experience

For their game against Japan (again), Carli wears the captains arm band once again. All of the set pieces were designed by assistant Tony Gustavsson, and Carli gets the first corner kick. Jill was the kind of coach that didn't tell her players what to do, because she knows that they are all grown women playing on her team. During the first few minutes of the game, Carli proves just why she is wearing the captains band on the team. Pinoe takes an amazing corner, and Carli darts right after it. An amazing ball, and an amazing run. She went up to kick it, and it went right to the left of the goal, with the keeper having no chance of saving it. They end up scoring a total of four goals against the Japanese in the first sixteen minutes. They had won the World Cup, and everyone ran onto the field cheering for the U.S.
20th experience
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBosyOJ3PIY
